Teachers often find it financially necessary to look for part-time work. Because their skills are varied, they are able to qualify for a number of different kinds of work. They have been trained to be detail oriented, and this translates into an ability to perform tasks such as bookkeeping and editing. Their communication skills must be well honed as they deal with students, parents, and colleagues. Customer service and human resource areas are generally a good fit for teachers because of their abilities to tactfully and diplomatically make themselves understood. Management is another area in which a teacher must excel if he or she purports to run successful curriculum. If one maintains student attention, controls class discussions and assignments, inspires student research, and sustains enthusiasm for the subject matter, then management skills are certainly apparent.

The most difficult facet of the teachers part-time employment journey is finding the time to actually do another job. A teacher supervises students during non-instructional time, teaches incessantly throughout instructional time, and spends many unencumbered hours with assessment of student work and the construction of lesson plans and teaching units. The requirements of the job leave little time for recreation, personal relationships, and/or maintenance of health and fitness. Squeezing a few extra hours out of an already exacting schedule is the difficulty that keeps most educators from seeking additional employment. When and if they are able to do it, the second job is often the means for a harried teacher to find release from the stresses that are the norm in the world of education.
